How to set up a static IP-address

The following article shows you how to set up a static IP-address on Windows, Mac and Linux.  

What is an IP-address? 

An Internet Protocol address (IP-address) is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network, that uses the Internet Protocol for communication, such as your roast machine. The IP-address consists of four number blocks that can reach from 0 to 255, e.g. 192.168.2.180.

Static IP address configuration - Windows 7, 8, 10, 11

  1. From the desktop, Search from the Windows task bar for Control panel.
  2. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center
    Note: You may also enter ncpa.cpl in the Windows search field.
  3. On the left panel, click the Change adapter settings link.
  4. Identify the network adapter-icon that refers to the roast machine connection.
    If you are not sure which item refers to the roast machine, simply disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable and check which icon changes its status.
  5. Right-click the network adapter and select Properties.
  6. Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option and click the Properties button.
  7. Select Use the following IP Address option.
  8. Enter the specific IP Address for your roaste machine, and change the last number block to 42.
  9. Click the OK button to apply the changes. 

If your roast machine's IP-address is 192.168.2.180 use the following:

  • IP Address: 192.168.2.42
  • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Creating a new network location

  1. Go to > System Preferences > Network
  2. Identify the Network connection item that refers to the connection to your machine and select the item.
    If you are not sure which item refers to your roast machine, simply disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable again and check which one changes its status from Not Connected to Connected.
  3. Open the Locations drop-down menu and an click Edit Locations...
  4. Create a new location by clicking the + sign and name it after your machine, e.g. Probat.
  5. Click Done to confirm.

The statuses next to the network connection item will change to Not connected. After setting the static IP address the status will say Connected again.

Configuring the static IP address

  1. Make sure the Network connection item that refers to the connection to your machine is still selected.
  2. Open the Configure IPv4 dropdown and choose Manually.
  3. Enter the specific IP Address for your roaster and change the last number block to 42.
  4. Click the Apply button to confirm the changes. 

If your roast machine's IP-address is 192.168.2.180 use the following:

  • IP Address: 192.168.2.42
  • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Static IP address configuration - Linux

The following screen-shots are taken on Ubuntu with the Gnome Desktop. Should your menu look differently just search for Settings or Network in your system's search bar to find the corresponding settings. Should you still not be able find it, open a support request by clicking the support button in the lower left corner of the RI, stating your Linux distribution and Desktop environment.

  1. Open the system menu in the upper right corner and click the cog symbol to open the preferences.
  2. Navigate to Network and click the + on Wired (connections)
  3. Enter a name (e.g. Probat) for the configuration under the Identity tab.
  4. Switch to the IPv4 tab.
  5. Select Manual.
  6. Enter the specific IP Address for your roaster and change the last number block to 42.
  7. Click Add to save the changes. 
  8. Make sure you have the right network profile selected in the system menu.

If your roast machine's IP-address is 192.168.2.180 use the following:

  • Address: 192.168.2.42
  • Netmask: 255.255.255.0

Client IPs matching default manufacturer IPs

Loring/Coffeetool/Bühler: 192.168.1.42

Giesen (before February 2018)/IMF: 192.168.2.42

Giesen (after February 2018): 172.30.30.42

Kirsch+Mausser: 10.32.176.42

Toper: 192.168.137.42
